Artist Statement: My Thoughts on Illustration and Prints ...
Illustration is pictorial communication, the ability to visually expand written text. A successful picture book integrates both art and narrative to produce a unified whole, a marriage of words and pictures.
Hellen Keller wrote, "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all." For me the act of creating a picture book, which has the capacity to teach, inspire, and delight children of all ages, is that daring adventure.
My new book (out this coming September 2012) is called : THE YEAR COMES ROUND (Haiku through the Seasons) written by Sid Farrar. Two of the illustrations from this new book are on exhibit here. Also on exhibit is a picture from FARMER IN THE DELL. This book came out some years ago, but this fall it will be coming out in Japan!
My other passion in art has been printmaking. Some etchings and monoprints are also included in this exhibit. These works are for sale. Many of these images are abstract, or expressionistic. I love the "surprise" element in monoprints, which is very free and spontaneous. One never knows what the result will be. Also, in the case of monoprints, there can only be one (unless we consider the "ghost print" -- which can sometimes be derived from the same plate, but is still a bit different from the original.)
Besides these works, I've had fun in creating an illustration for Middlesex Bank for a "gift bag" and a CD for the Amber Flute Quartet, for the 50th Season of the Baltic Concert Series of New England. One never knows how a piece of art will translate to other areas! It will be interesting to see where my images end up next! Stay tuned! Best wishes, Ilse
