Our Story

Indian Hill Music is a non-profit regional center for music education and performance located in Littleton, Massachusetts. Our mission is to benefit individuals, families and communities through music.

Our 25th Birthday!

May 2010 marks our 25th year of excellence in teaching and performance in Littleton ... Since then we have grown from an organization with the sole asset of one piano in need of repair and a budget of $300,000 to a $2.4M nationally-recognized center of excellence in music education, performance and community engagement. Over the past 25 years, thousands of people like you from our local communities have participated in Indian Hill’s Music School, Orchestra and Outreach programs.

Today, our ever-expanding offerings in musical philanthropy allow those least able to access music the opportunity to experience its joy at little or no cost to them. From free monthly concerts for seniors to music lessons in struggling public schools, these efforts have only been possible with the support of many generous individuals, corporations and foundations.

A Brief History

Indian Hill Music (formerly Indian Hill Arts) was created in 1985 to provide the best in music education
and performance for the whole community. The center's founders combined the music education programs
developed by a local arts organization (Groton Center for the Arts) with the previously established Indian Hill Symphony. The music education programs grew into a full-fledged community music school, Indian Hill Music School, accredited by the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts in 1991. Over the past 20 years, Indian Hill Music has grown to become a major cultural institution in the region. In 1995, the National Endowment for the Arts selected the center as one of 30 organizations from across the country to participate in the Advancement Program for strategic planning. Our mission was clarified during the planning process and was vital in managing the phenomenal growth of the organization in the subsequent three years. In 2001, the center constructed and dedicated a 200-seat recital facility, Camilla Blackman Hall, completing a five-year, $3.5 million Capital Campaign called "Make Space for Music". The new space is used for Indian Hill's Guest Artist Series, student recitals, ensembles, and special events.

Programs

IHM's professional concert series features classical and popular music programs attended by some 6,000 people at venues in Littleton and Groton. Now in its 35th season, the Orchestra of Indian Hill is Greater Boston's premier professional orchestra. Led by Artistic Director Bruce Hangen, the orchestra offers a six-concert symphony series at Littleton High School Performing Arts Center. Indian Hill offers chamber music, jazz, faculty concerts, and family events at its own 200-seat Camilla Blackman Hall. Plus, the prestigious Kalliroscope Gallery Chamber Music series features intimate evenings of world-class performers at the beautiful art gallery of Paul Matisse in Groton.

A major cultural resource for the region, IHM provides a place for first-time music makers and aspiring professionals to experience all facets of music. Established in 1985, Indian Hill Music School serves more than 1,500 students of all ages and abilities with its faculty of over 75 professional musicians and 21 state-of-the-art studios. The school offers private and group lessons on all instruments as well as ensembles, workshops, and masterclasses with renowned musicians. The Music School awards more than $37,000 in need-based scholarships to students in its service area each year.

Indian Hill Music is an organization that interacts closely with the community and is devoted to performing, teaching, learning, creating and listening to music. It is a place for music educators and performers to share their knowledge and expertise with the community and their fellow musicians. Indian Hill Music's Outreach Program partners with surrounding communities to provide educational musical experiences in public and private schools in the form of performances, professional development for classroom teachers, individual classroom curriculum-related residencies, and reduced rates in needy communities for children who would not otherwise have these experiences. We are committed to serving economically disadvantaged families and elders by offering them the opportunity to attend symphonic family concerts and intimate educational concerts. Our Outreach Program also includes creating community partnerships with elder housing organizations, nursing homes, hospitals and other community organizations.
Hundreds of people each year donate their time, talents and money to contribute to the growth and success of Indian Hill Music. We depend upon the commitment and support of Business Partners, Corporate Sponsors, individuals, foundations and volunteers who recognize the importance of the arts in their community.
