It's your time to play! Engage with your peers in a fun and challenging ensemble program for amateur adult musicians, in a relaxed setting. Work on musicality, listening, and balance with our accomplished faculty artists. Participants will have the opportunity to play in two ensembles (trios, quartets, quintets) personally selected to match the musicians’ skill level and style preferences.

Open to intermediate-advanced strings, winds, piano, harp, and guitar. While chamber music experience is not required, participants should have strong technical, rhythmic, and reading skills.

Tim Terranella, coordinator/strings/flute
Tim has performed as both cellist and flutist with many of Boston's most prestigious musical organizations including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Esplanade Pops, New Hampshire Symphony, Cape Cod Symphony, Symphony New Hampshire, Boston Academy of Music, Claflin Hill Symphony, Boston Lyric Opera, and the Bostonian Chamber Players. He has also performed and recorded in the New York area as a member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Tim has dedicated much of his professional experience to teaching the cello and flute and coaching chamber ensembles. He holds degrees from The Boston Conservatory and the Curtis Institute of Music, and has served on the faculties of Boston University, Buckingham and Nichols School, and the Groton School.

What is the playing level required for Summer Night Music?

Participants should have good intermediate to advance playing and music reading skills.

Do I have to audition?

All new registrants will be scheduled for a 15-minute audition/placement interview with the program coordinator. Musicians who participated in Summer Night Music in previous years or those who are current Indian Hill Music students do not need to audition. Your responses on the registration form about repertory and ensemble preferences will be shared with the coordinator.

When is music distributed?

Music will be sent to participants 2 weeks before the start of the program. Early registration is especially helpful to the faculty as it provides ample time to have placement auditions, form groups, and pick repertory in advance of the start date. Your enrollment by mid-May is appreciated.

I play several different instruments. Can I use more than one in the program?

Yes. You are welcome to play multiple instruments. This should be indicated on the registration form and shared with the program coordinator at your placement audition.

Is home practice required?

Of course we encourage home practice! Rehearsal time with your groups is limited, so working out the difficult sections in your music at home or with your private instructor is appreciated by everyone.

Can I schedule some private lessons to work on my Summer Night music?

Private lessons can be scheduled for those wishing to work through the technical and interpretive details of their assigned pieces prior to the start of the program, or anytime during the program weeks. Please contact the Music School offfice to discuss lesson placement and schedule. Lessons are not included in the SummerNightMusic tuition amount and will be billed separately.

Is weekly attendance required?

Small ensembles are greatly affected when one of the musicians is missing, so your consistent attendance is essential. One planned absence is allowed but it cannot be August 15 (dress rehearsal day) or August 22 (concert day).

Is the performance open to the public?

Yes. Family and friends are welcome to attend the finale concert on Wed, August 22 at 7:00 pm.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Indian Hill Music School reserves the right at any time to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment. We will make every effort to hold all classes offered. In the case of a cancellation, those effected will be notified as soon as possible and a full refund will be issued if another suitable class is not available.
