“Not only does she succeed in the risky task of making jazz from the sound of the cuatro, our national instrument, but she does it resonantly. Her music has the syncopation, the harmonic changes, the particular relationship between the instruments that the genre demands and above all, that spirit of nonconformity, that desire to creatively break the mold, which characterizes the best jazz recordings.” – Fundación Nacional para la Cultura Popular, Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico native Fabiola Mari Méndez Quiñones started playing the Puerto Rican cuatro at age 6, and later became the first student to specialize in the traditional folk instrument, experimenting with jazz and adopting contemporary techniques that give her a sound all her own. Winner of the “National Cuatro Player Competition” in 2011 by the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture, her 2019 release Al Otro Lado del Charco was featured on NPR and considered one of the TOP 20 albums of 2019 by the Puerto Rico National Foundation for Popular Music. Fabiola has collaborated with artists such as: the Puerto Rican Symphony Orchestra, Totó la Momposina, Pedro Capó, Victoria Sanabria, Cucco Peña, Eddie Palmieri, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Danny Rivera, Edwin Colón Zayas, Los Rayos Gamma, among many others.
